MEGANEBASHI Bridge
I took a break after about 9 hours walking from my home, looking up at MEGANEBASHI Bridge. It was the third day of the consecutive vacation in May today, but it was silent and there were not so many tourists. The bridge for the railroad was built in 1891 (26 MEIJI period), and was used for 72 years to 1963 (38 SHOWA period). It has already been abolished though. The description that the bridge straddles the valley is more suitable than the description that it across the river. It is one of the biggest bridges made of red brick in the country, and it is specified to be a Nationally Important Cultural Property. The height from the water surface of the river is 31 meters, there is a walking path to go up to the railroad for tourists. I feel this artificial building has artistic beauty with a natural background, if I imagine the steam locomotive pulling the train had run having spited black smoke out 130 years ago on this bridge.
